Papillon Papillon (common misspellings: pappilon, papilon) is a small, friendly, elegant toy dog.
The Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dogs with a recorded history in Europe going back nearly 700 years. Papilion is believed to descends from Spanish dwarf spaniel. This breed was also known as Continental Toy Spaniel, or Squirrel Spaniel. The drop eared variety of the breed was called the Phalene.
The word "Papillon" means "butterfly dog" in French. The breed got this name due to their beautiful butterfly ears. It is believed that the name was given by Marie Antoinette who was fond of Papillons. The others famouse owners of papillons was Henry III and Madame de Pompadour. In 17 centure these dogs were extremely popular in court circles in France.They were also portrayed in many paintings of the Renaissance period.
Pappilon are gentle, alert and vivacious. Neither shy nor aggressive. They make a good home pet as well watchdog or ratter. They rank number one Toy Dog in obedience.
The Papillon has a fine, silky, flowing coat, fine-boned structure, well fringed ears. The ideal height at withers is 8 to 11 inches, weight is 3 - 9 lbs. The dog should be white with patches of any color. A color other than white should cover both eyes and both ears back to front.
They usually very healthy with life span 13 - 16 years.
Exercise needs are minimal but is also used for long walk. Papillions need weekly brushing of the coat.
The breed is recognized by CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, NZKC
