History and Origin
The Doberman Pinscher is a rather young breed of working dogs. It was created by a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann in the end of the 19th century. He used crosses among German Pinschers with Rottweilers, Beauceron, Pinschers, Greyhounds to make a dog which would suit his diverse needs. First of all the Doberman was bred as a smart bodyguard and a watchdog, for Louis Dobermann had to travel a lot on his tax collector duties in bandit-infested areas. His endeavour was a quite successful. The breed quickly gained popularity and being called at first Thuringia Pinscher after Dobermann's death was named Doberman Pinscher in his honor. Pinscher means terrier in German. Later other breeders in particular Otto Goeller contributed a lot in the Doberman Pinscher development. They softened the Doberman Pinscher's nature that was a rather ferocious dog at the early stages of the breed. The Doberman Pinscher gained the recognition as a police dog as well as a family companion.
