Japanese Bobtail

History and Origin

The Japanese Bobtail is an old cat breed known for centuries in Japan. The ancestors of these cats were brought to Japan from China about a thousand years ago. They were bred in isolation and kept as mascots. They were believed to bring good luck, particularly Kaliko coloured (white with big dark spots). In 1968 first three Japanese Bobtails were imported by Elizabeth Freret to USA . These cats quickly gained recognition and were accepted for championship competition in 1976 by CFA.

Appearance

The Japanese Bobtail is a middle sized athletic cat. The short bob-like tail is a distinguishing feature. The tail should be about 2,5-7,5 cm and must be clearly visible according to the breed standard. Due to the unique set of its eyes the Japanese Bobtail has a "Japanese" look. The ears are large and upright. The breeding in USA was started from shorthaired cats, but later longhaired were also discovered and accepted for breeding and shows. Japanese bobtail may be of any colour apart from silver and pointed.

Temperament and Personality

These cats are very social and good-natured. They get on with people as well as other pets. While sitting they often raise one paw which is believed to foreshadow good luck.
